The Internet Cashflow Guy Unveils Niche Website

Posted on April 19, 2006 at 1:48 pm

The Internet Cashflow Guy had been posting about his process of coming up with an idea for a niche website. The execution was shrouded in secrecy but today finally lifted the covers of his first niche website Orchid Care Info.

The site was beautifully designed and color-matched to the petals, leaves and stems of an orchid. Asthetically, it was a very pleasing tour. The subject matter was really, REALLY focused. I wondered what was the rationale behind the choice. Search engine promotion would be critical. Orchid Care Info leveraged WordPress to churn out content pages that kept links within the site, or clicks to advertisers.

A few observations were that the firefox icon link he had at the bottom of the sidebar doesn’t seem to be an affiliate link. Internet Cashflow Guy could possibly leverage Goggle’s Adsense referral program or do away with the link because it’s a “leak” out of the page.

The inline ad boxes and link ads at the top should do well, but some of the other ad placements felt awkward - especially the ads on the bottom section.

Finally, a few observations on both his main site and the niche site revealed the SEO no-no of not using titled permalinks. Wordpress has the ability to use the post’s title as the permalink. Which of these two URLS would you think that search engine bots prefer?

  • “orchidcareinfo.com/the-orchid-myths-what-is-the-truth”
  • - OR -

  • “orchidcareinfo.com/?page_id=20″.

Let’s hope Internet Cashflow Guy will keep us updated on this venture as well as his future ventures!

This is great advice…thank you so much for visiting and your comments. I too feel ackward about the AdBrite ads at the bottom of the site. I am going to revisit this and see what works best. I will also look at using permalinks - I have to investigate how to do this but I imagine it is an option with Wordpress.

    Thanks again for the comments.

Ok, I have been trying to use the permalink feature, but I keep getting a 404 page not found error. I have tried to update all the links, create new pages etc but I cannot get it to work (I do have to manually create the htaccess file, as I can’t seem to have Wp2.0 create it for me, even after doing a chmod 777 on the file). Any suggestions?

[...] Due to 1off’s suggestions I have spent the night trying to update the links to the various pages within Orchid Care Info to use permalinks as opposed to numbers. What I am trying to do is go from this: [...]

    TIC Guy,

I guess you’ve checked out the WordPress codex. If not, here it is “http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks”

I’m not sure who your host is, but WP2 should be able to create/rewrite .htaccess file with no problem. Without knowing more about your server setup, I’d recommend checking in with your hosting provider? Hope everything works out!

Another diagnostic you can run is to turn off all plugins, some plugins also work with .htaccess and may be the issue.
